ADVANCED CHIROPRACTIC HELPS SECOND HARVEST FOOD BANK

Jan. 28, 2011 (Youngstown, OH) – For the month of February, Advanced Chiropractic is collecting non- perishable food and other items to benefit Second Harvest Food Bank of the Mahoning Valley at its Boardman office located at 1315 Boardman Canfield Rd., in the Pelican Park Plaza.

According to Second Harvest Food Bank, 1 in 6 Americans are unsure where their next meal is coming from. Locally, the need is even greater. A study released by the Food Research and Action Center (FRAC) in August 2011 revealed that the Youngstown-Warren-Boardman area ranks #3 in child food hardship among the nation’s top 100 metropolitan areas. In addition, the Ohio Department of Education reports that 49.9% of the children in the Mahoning Valley are eligible for free or reduced-price meals.

Second Harvest Food Bank of the Mahoning Valley distributes approximately 35,000 pounds of food daily to 153 hunger relief organizations in Columbiana, Mahoning, and Trumbull counties through soup kitchens, church pantries, homeless shelters, battered women shelters, and after-school programs. This totaled 9 million pounds of food, including 2 million pounds of fresh fruit and vegetables in 2011 alone. Dr. Michael Lyons of Advanced Chiropractic notes that “Nine million pounds is a huge amount of food, and Second Harvest relies on donations. They really need our help.”

To help encourage donations, Advanced Chiropractic is offering free or discounted services to people who bring a donation worth $10 or more. Existing patients can receive free services on February 18, 2012, while new patients can receive an examination, including necessary x-rays for only $20.12 the entire month of February, and these proceeds will also benefit Second Harvest Food Bank of the Mahoning Valley. “Often times, we only hear about the need during the holidays, but there really is a need year round. That’s why we wanted to do this in February.” stated Dr. Joseph Totaro, a chiropractic physician with Advanced Chiropractic. Suggested items to bring include dry cereal, boxed food items, canned food, soup, soap, laundry detergent, and paper products. To contact Advanced Chiropractic, call 330-726-7404.
